HC Deb 13 June 1912 vol 39 c1036
33. EARL of RONALDSHAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India if legislation is impending which would prohibit the importation into India of sulphur matches?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Montagu)

The Government of India last year introduced a Bill into the Legislative Council on the lines of the White Phosphorus Match Prohibition Act. In view of representations that the information before the Council was insufficient, the Bill has been withdrawn. It is intended to reintroduce it in the next Winter Session of the Council.

EARL of RONALDSHAY

Will the hon. Gentleman say whether the Government have taken into the consideration the fact that owing to their sartorial arrangements, or rather the absence of them, boxes are of no use to millions of Indian peasants?

Mr. MONTAGU

All that sort of consideration will be open for discussion on the Bill and can be further discussed next Session.
