HC Deb 11 June 1912 vol 39 cc692-3
62. Captain MURRAY

asked whether the Order recently issued by the President of the Local Government Board prohibiting motorists from driving with open cutouts is not infrequently disregarded by motorists within the Metropolitan area; and whether he will issue further instructions to the police in this matter?

Mr. McKENNA

No complaints have reached me since the Order was issued; and the Metropolitan Police report that there has been a marked decrease in the nuisance. I will consider whether any further action on my part is necessary or practicable.

72. Captain MURRAY

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether he is aware that, notwithstanding the circular issued last year by the Commissioner of Police, many drivers of motor vehicles in London still continue, especially during the hours commonly devoted to sleep, to make excessive and inconsiderate use of warning signals; and whether, in these circumstances, he can hold out hopes of shortly passing legislation on the lines continued in the Motor Traffic (Street Noises) Bill introduced on 26th March, 1912?

Mr. BURNS

I am assured that there has been a noticeable reduction during the last twelve months in the inconsiderate use of warning signals by motorists, and I hope that the action of my hon. and gallant Friend in drawing attention afresh to this matter may further assist in reducing the nuisance. I am sure that the drivers of motor cars have no desire to destroy the repose of their fellow citizens. I cannot promise legislation on the lines suggested.

Captain MURRAY

Who has given this assurance?

Mr. BURNS

I confirm the views of the police myself.
