HC Deb 17 December 1912 vol 45 c1302
82. Mr. O'GRADY

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that the wages of the mail van drivers (Belfast) range from 17s. 9d. to 21s. 3d. for a week of from sixty-four to eighty hours; and whether, having regard to the fact that carters in the employ of city (Belfast) firms are paid 24s. per week for fifty-nine hours, steps will be taken to insist that the firm doing the mail van work for the Post Office shall pay an equivalent wage to their drivers?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

I find that there has been a change in local conditions affecting Belfast mail van drivers, and I am inquiring whether, in view of the change, the Fair-Wages Clause is still being properly observed.
