HC Deb 02 April 1912 vol 36 cc1047-8
MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

asked in what manner typists were appointed in the offices of the Scottish Insurance Commissioners; if by examination, who were the examiners in the last examination; was it publicly advertised; on what date and where was it held; and how many applicants were there and how many vacancies?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The typists employed by the Scottish Commission have been appointed in accordance with the ordinary Treasury Regulations. Nominations were invited from the seven principal training schools for typists in Edinburgh. Eighteen applicants sent in their names, of whom three were disqualified by their age. The remaining fifteen were examined on the 9th and 10th February by the Civil Service Commissioners, and the six who proved to be most proficient were appointed.

MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

Is it the fact that five out of the six went to one particular firm? If so, what is the name of the firm?

Mr. MASTERMAN

How on earth can I answer that without notice?

Sir C. KINLOCH-COOKE

Will the hon. Gentleman say whether the chairman of the Scottish Insurance Commission was ever connected with a firm of typewriter agents?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The hon. Member must give notice of that question.
