HC Deb 29 November 1911 vol 32 c408
Mr. HUNT

asked whether the right hon. Gentleman is aware that two wrecks have occurred within the last month off the Island of Islay, one at Oa and one at Kilchearn, four of the crew being lost, and that wrecks have often occurred in former years; and whether he will take steps to provide as soon as possible a rocket and life-saving apparatus for use on an emergency by the natives in Islay?

Mr. ROBERTSON

My attention has been called to the wreck of the Norwegian steamer "Ena" on 20th October last, and to the wreck of the Russian barque "Ocean" on 4th November, with the unfortunate loss of four lives. No casualties attended with loss of life have been reported to the Board of Trade as having occurred on the coast of Islay during the past five years, except the case of the "Ocean." The Board of Trade will consider whether it is necessary, and, if so, practicable, to place a rocket life-saving apparatus on the island.

Mr. HUNT

Is the hon. Member aware that some time ago a number of boats were washed ashore on this island, which looked as if a ship had foundered and gone down there?

Mr. ROBERTSON

If he hon. Member will give me precise details they will be considered.
