HC Deb 29 November 1911 vol 32 cc407-8
Mr. FREDERICK WHYTE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has any information regarding the proposed adoption by the French Government of what are popularly known as "blind" lighthouses, in which Hertzian waves are used instead of light; and, if so, whether he has considered the advisability of establishing stations thus equipped at such points on the coasts of the United Kingdom as are especially beset by fogs?

Mr. J. M. ROBERTSON

I am informed that the French lighthouse authorities propose, during the course of next year, to commence making experimental trials at certain stations of Hertzian wave fog signals, which are presumably the "blind" lighthouses referred to in my hon. Friend's question. The initiation of proposals in regard to light- houses rests with the general lighthouse authorities. I am informed by the Trinity House that they are following this subject with interest, and that in response to their request the French lighthouse authorities have undertaken to supply them with information as to the progress and results of their experiments.

Mr. WATT

Will that information be available to Members of the House?

Mr. ROBERTSON

I am afraid I cannot answer that question.
