HC Deb 14 November 1911 vol 31 cc203-4
Mr. LANE-FOX

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty for what public purpose he was accompanied by the reporter of the "Daily Mail" on his trip in a submarine on Monday last?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

The hon. Member's question was on the Paper as a starred question on Thursday last. It was not reached, and therefore the reply of my right hon. Friend the First Lord of the Admiralty, appeared in the OFFICIAL REPORT. It was as follows:— The hon. Member's amiable assumption is without the slightest foundation. On the contrary, instructions were given that no reporters should be allowed to approach the submarines or enter the submarine depot on the occasion.

Mr. LANE-FOX

Are we to understand that the elaborate description of the right hon. Gentleman's experience below water was entirely an invention of the "Daily Mail" reporter, or was it supplied by the right hon. Gentleman?

Dr. MACNAMARA

That is not a question which should be put to me. I have stated that instructions were given that no reporters should be allowed to approach the submarine or enter the submarine depot.

Colonel YATE

Was the right hon. Gentleman accompanied by a photographer?
