Mr. POWERasked what steps it is proposed to take to improve the status and emoluments of the clerks employed in the offices of surveyor of taxes, considering the private and confidential business they transact; and what proportion of these clerks are recognised as Civil servants?
Mr. McKINNON WOODSubstantial improvements in the conditions of service of clerks to surveyors of taxes have been made in recent years. Of 827 men clerks employed, 230 are established Civil servants.
Mr. POWERWill the right hon. Gentleman promise to reconsider this question and find proper terms of employment for these men who have to transact most delicate business?
Mr. McKINNON WOODThe Treasury do consider that those who transact delicate business should have proper terms of employment, and they have been put on the establishment. I cannot make any promise.
