HC Deb 24 May 1911 vol 26 cc254-5
Mr. CHIOZZA MONEY

asked the President of the Local Government Board what was the estimated excess of births over deaths in the United Kingdom in 1910; and what was the number of British emigrants from the United Kingdom in that year?

The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Burns)

The excess of registered births over deaths in the United Kingdom during the year 1910 amounted approximately to 492,000. According to a return published by the Board of Trade, the number of British subjects who left ports in the United Kingdom for countries out of Europe during the year referred to exceeded the number who arrived from such countries by about 234,000.

Mr. CHIOZZA MONEY

Is it not a fact that in the month of April the excess was as many as 41,000, or nearly as much as the whole increase of births over deaths?

Mr. BURNS

The hon. Member will see in to-day's paper for himself the extraordinarily large increase of emigration there is in the first four months of this year as compared with 1910.

Mr. CHIOZZA MONEY

Will the right hon. Gentleman bring this very serious question to the notice of the Cabinet?

Mr. BURNS

The Cabinet are aware of the figures.
