HC Deb 17 May 1911 vol 25 cc2008-9
Mr. CHIOZZA MONEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade, with reference to the refusal on the ground of redundancy to publish for the information of Parliament a translation of the Report on the rise in German wages by the Director of the Schöneberg Statistical Office because the Board of Trade's Abstracts of Foreign Labour Statistics afford the same information, if he has now examined the German Report in question; if he is now aware that it contains information in addition to that given in Cd. 5415, pages 57 to 65; if he is aware that the Report in question is not mentioned in the Appendix to Cd. 5415, which gives a complete list of the German records used by the Board of Trade; and if he will follow the example of the American Government, which has published a special account of the Report of the Schoneberg Statistical Office?

Mr. BUXTON

I am afraid my previous answer has not been quite understood. It is not considered necessary to translate this German book at the public expense, because the official statistics which appear in it, and also official statistics of later date, have already been utilised, so far as considered useful and practicable, in Board of Trade publications.

Mr. CHIOZZA MONEY

Is it not the case that it was stated in the House by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board that an abstract of the data is contained in his figures, and whether, in view of their importance, the right hon. Gentleman would publish them?

Mr. BUXTON

The answer is that as far as we have got practical use for them we have already utilised them, and we do not, therefore, consider it necessary at the public expense to have a translation.

Mr. CHIOZZA MONEY

Is it not the case that the report shows that they are not utilised?

Mr. BUXTON

They are utilised as far as they are considered practical.
