HC Deb 15 May 1911 vol 25 c1652
Mr. BOWERMAN

asked if the Chancellor of the Exchequer, had received representations from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons respecting the liability of motor-cars used by veterinary surgeons to motor-spirit duty; and, if so, whether he would consider the propriety of extending to veterinary surgeons the exemption from such payment granted to medical men?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I will refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for the Stowmarket Division last Thursday.

Mr. BOWERMAN

Is it not the fact that veterinary surgeons do a large amount of work for the Board of Agriculture, for which they are somewhat inadequately remunerated; and, if that be so, does it not justify them in the request they make to be exempted from the payment of the duty?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

It is not really a question for the Government, because no part of this money comes to the Exchequer. It is more a question for Local authorities, because every penny of the money goes to the improvement of roads.
