HC Deb 01 May 1911 vol 25 c5
Mr. VINCENT KENNEDY

asked the Home Secretary if he would say whether he or his department has received representations from Ireland urging the propriety of a system of remuneration for jurymen summoned on the common jury panel; is he aware that this happens four times a year; will he say, giving the date, if any order has been issued enabling the attendance of jurymen to be cancelled when their services are not required; and will he have special consideration given to the claims of Trish jurors, in view of the long-distance journeys often imposed and the deficient travelling facilities in any proposed legislation?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Any representations received at the Home Office with regard to juries in Ireland would be at once forwarded to the Irish Office, the question, so far as it relates to Ireland, not being one for my Department.

Viscount CASTLEREAGH

Is it the intention of the present Government to make an investigation into the jury system?

Mr. CHURCHILL

If the Noble Lord had been present, when the Prime Minister was asked a question on the subject he would know that the Government is contemplating an inquiry. Whether it shall be by Select Committee of the House of Commons as suggested by the hon. Member (Mr. Harry Lawson) or by Royal Commissioners or Departmental Committee is not yet settled.
