HC Deb 15 March 1911 vol 22 cc2230-1
Mr. NEVILLE

asked the Prime Minister whether His Majesty's Government approved Lord Chelmsford's refusal to remove the deadlock between the Upper and the Lower Chamber in Queensland in 1907 by swamping the Upper House, on the ground that a question so vitally affecting the relations of the two Houses should be submitted to the people at a general election?

Mr. HARCOURT

The Prime Minister desires me to say that he has nothing to add to my answer of the 13th March.

Mr. NEVILLE

Is this House not entitled to know what passed in the case of the deadlock in Queensland between the representative of the Government and the Colonial Office?

Mr. HARCOURT

I do not think it can be said that this House is entitled to know what, if any, confidential communications take place between the Secretary of State and the Governor of a colony.

Mr. NEVILLE

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman if we are not entitled to know whether His Majesty's Government approve or disapprove of the way in which Lord Chelmsford dealt with the deadlock in Queensland?

Mr. HARCOURT

No, I think not.
