asked whether the right hon. Gentleman will state the number of men clerks to surveyors of taxes who have been offered promotion during the past two years, and the number of such clerks who have accepted the promotion; whether he will state the number of men clerks who have been granted an increase of salary on accepting promotion during the same period; and the number of clerks who have declined the offered promotion?

One hundred and sixty-two clerks to surveyors of taxes have been offered promotion during the past two years, and of these 137 have accepted it. Fifty-six clerks have been granted an increase of salary on accepting promotion; and twenty-five have declined promotion.
