HC Deb 15 March 1911 vol 22 cc2228-9
Mr. NORMAN CRAIG

asked if the right hon. Gentleman will state in what way the names of the four members of the council of the Marine Biological Association, who have been appointed to the advisory committee formed by the Development Commissioners in reference to fishery matters, are connected with original research having a direct bearing on the solution of fishery problems; and where the results of their investigations are published?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

Of the four gentlemen referred to one was nominated by the Fishmongers' Company and another by the Marine Biological Association. The other two gentlemen were appointed by the Development Commissioners, neither on account of their connection with the Marine Biological Association nor on account of their contributions to original research, but because their standing and scientific attainments are believed to constitute them useful advisers to the Development Commissioners.

Mr. NORMAN CRAIG

Am I to understand that the professor of anatomy at Oxford and the master of Christ's College, Cambridge, are, in the opinion of the Government, fit persons to be appointed?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

Yes, or they would not otherwise have been appointed.

Mr. RAWLINSON

Is it not a fact that the Marine Biological Association contains some of the most learned men, and amongst them the two names just mentioned, gentlemen of the widest experience?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I believe that is so.

Mr. MORRELL

Why is the western coast not represented?
