HC Deb 13 June 1911 vol 26 c1452
Mr. BOTTOMLEY

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what new appointments he has made to the chief constable's staff of the uniform branch of the Metropolitan police; what salary is attached to the offices; and what qualifications the persons appointed to them possess for their duties?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Churchill)

When I came to the Home Office there were four chief constables in the uniform branch of the Metropolitan police. I have filled up one vacancy caused by death, and have also appointed one additional chief constable, this appointment being rendered necessary partly by the general growth of work arising from the increased numbers of the force, and specially by the creation of boards to deal with matters of discipline and the licensing of drivers and of motors vehicles. The salary of these posts is £600, rising by annual increments of £25 to £800. The vacancy in question was filled by an officer with a distinguished military career, and the new post by a barrister with the legal training required for his particular duties, both being personally interviewed by the Chief Commissioner.

Mr. BOTTOMLEY

That is satisfactory.
