HC Deb 13 June 1911 vol 26 cc1452-3
Mr. WILES

asked whether, having regard to the strain which will necessarily be placed upon the Metropolitan police force during the approaching Coronation festivities, he would give instructions that proper facilities shall be made for men who are serving long spells of duty at considerable distances from the nearest police station to have suitable refreshments provided for them, near to the most crowded parts, either by means of movable canteens placed in side streets or by some other convenient method?

Mr. CHURCHILL

All the men on duty will be supplied with suitable rations, and provision is being made for refreshments being available on the line of the procession; but it is, of course, impossible to say beforehand when or how far it will be practicable to allow the men to leave their posts for the purpose of using these facilities.

Mr. REMNANT

Is it proposed to make any allowance to these men in the shape of extra pay for the extra work to be performed during the Coronation?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The conditions of service in the Metropolitan police force cover all emergencies and special contingencies of this character.

Mr. REMNANT

Is it not the fact that on special occasions extra money is given to these men for extra duty, and that it has been done in the past?
