HC Deb 10 July 1911 vol 28 cc26-7
Dr. CHAPPLE

asked the Postmaster-General whether he has now ceased to use the post office in Polmont village, Stirlingshire, as a receiving and distributing centre and has transferred this work to Polmont Station post office, over a mile distant from the village; whether he has considered the inconvenience which is caused to the inhabitants of the village and to the neighbouring carse by this curtailment of the postal facilities which they have enjoyed for generations; and whether, without prejudice to the development of Polmont Station post office, he will consider the advisability of restoring to Polmont village all the local postal advantages it has hitherto enjoyed?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

It was found desirable to make the alterations indicated by the hon. Member in order to do away with the anomaly of having two distributing centres within such a short distance of each other, involving considerable expense for duplication of mails as well as additional sorting work in various offices. There is little curtailment of the postal facilities in the locality generally, for, although the despatches from the Polmont Village office are made somewhat earlier, the deliveries on the whole have been accelerated.
