HC Deb 21 February 1911 vol 21 cc1719-20
Sir GEORGE DOUGHTY

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether he will cause expert inquiry to be made as to the value of Manitoba hard grain now brought to this country for British milling purposes, and as to the probable effect upon the British milling industry of the diversion of this quality of grain to the flour mills of the United States; and whether any alternative supply for this class of grain is open to the British miller?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Edward Strachey)

The supply of hard wheats of the class required by British millers is not confined to Canada, and the Board have no reason to suppose that any restriction of the supply will take place.

Mr. C. BATHURST

May I ask whether, in view of the successful production of wheat of this character by the Cambridge Chamber of Agriculture, there is any reason why, with the help of the Board of Agriculture, this deficiency should not be made up by the production on British farms?
