HC Deb 13 February 1911 vol 21 c697
Viscount CASTLEREAGH

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he could give the House any information concerning the murder of Patrick Sheehan at Ballindereen, which took place on Thursday night; whether Patrick Sheehan was under police protection at the time; and whether there had been any previous attempts made on his life?

Mr. BIRRELL

It is, I regret to state, the fact that Patrick Sheehan was murdered on the 9th instant. I understand that in 1905 and 1906 shots were fired into Sheehan's dwelling house, and that he was fired at and wounded in August, 1907. Sheehan has since 1905 been receiving police protection by patrols at night. He refused to accept constant protection. Four men have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Viscount CASTLEREAGH

Can the right hon. Gentleman state what was the reason for this outrageous attack on Patrick Sheehan's life?

Mr. BIRRELL

I would sooner not say anything having regard to the pending proceedings. With reference to the occurrences of 1905 and 1906, so far as I can make out, they were in connection with the taking of a small farm.

Viscount CASTLEREAGH

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether there is any likelihood of a proper inquiry being held into Patrick Sheehan's death?

Viscount HELMSLEY

I should like to ask whether steps have been taken to ensure that there will be a fair trial?
