HC Deb 14 December 1911 vol 32 cc2505-6
Sir JOHN LONSDALE

asked what was the amount of the deficiency ascertained to exist in the Suitors' Fund in the Supreme Court of Judicature, Ireland, as the result of the withdrawals from the fund for the purposes of The Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1908, and The Labourers Act, 1911?

Mr. BIRRELL

There has been no deficiency in the fund, and any possibility of a deficiency has been removed.

Sir J. LONSDALE

Why was it necessary to have recourse to the Consolidated Fund?

Mr. BIRRELL

The hon. Baronet knows perfectly well of the conditions of the Bill under which any deficiency, if there was one, was to be removed by the Treasury. No actual deficiency has occurred, but an anticipated deficiency appeared possible, but any possibility of a deficiency has been removed.
