HC Deb 14 December 1911 vol 32 cc2541-2
Lord C. BERESFORD

May I ask the Prime Minister a question, of which I have given him private notice—whether he can state to the House any of the circumstances attending the loss of the "Delhi," more particularly with regard to the gallant action of the French seamen on that occasion?

The PRIME MINISTER

The only information we have is as follows, from the Admiral Commanding the Fifth Cruiser Squadron to Vice-Admiral Jellicoe, Commander-in-Chief:— The women on the ship— that is the "Delhi"— have all been landed. The Princess Royal and patty are safe. All those remaining on board are perfectly safe for the night. That telegram does not give any information with regard to the action of the French seamen. I am quite sure the House will be glad to have this opportunity of acknowledging the extraordinary gallantry shown by the seamen of the French Navy, and of expressing our most sincere regret at the loss of life which has occurred, and our sincere condolences with those who have suffered.
