HC Deb 14 December 1911 vol 32 cc2501-2
Mr. STUART-WORTLEY

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that edge-tools imported into Portugal from Germany are subject to a duty of 20 reis per 100 kilos, whereas the like imports from the United Kingdom are subject to a duty of 60 reis per 100 kilos; and whether it is possible to effect any improvement in the terms of admission for these British imports into Portugal?

Sir E. GREY

The rates of duty are 20 reis and 60 reis per kilo respectively, not per 100 kilos. The question of concluding a commercial treaty between Great Britain and Portugal is still under consideration.

Mr. STUART-WORTLEY

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that Portugal has such a treaty with Germany?

Sir E. GREY

I must ask for notice of that question.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

May I ask if we have the benefit of the Most-Favoured-Nation Clause?

Sir E. GREY

We have not got the Most-Favoured-Nation treaty with Portugal. We are at present discussing the question of a commercial treaty.
