HC Deb 22 August 1911 vol 29 c2281
Mr. MacCALLUM SCOTT

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the dissatisfaction expressed in South Africa at the verdict of not guilty returned by a jury at Salisbury, Rhodesia, in the trial of Mr. Sam Lewis for shooting a Native newsboy; and whether he is taking any steps to assure the Native population of Rhodesia that the Imperial Government will use its influence to prevent the crime of lynching and to secure Natives the benefit of a fair trial?

Mr. HARCOURT

I am aware from Press telegrams that dissatisfaction has been expressed in South African news-papers. Otherwise I can add nothing to my answer to the hon. Member on the 18th instant.
