HC Deb 21 May 1910 vol 116 cc396-7
97. Colonel THORNE

asked the Food Controller whether sound fish is destroyed and converted into fertiliser at Billings gate, Grimsby, and other places which might have been sold for human consumption; if so, what steps have been taken by his Department to deal with the offenders; and if he can give any statistics of the fish landed at Billingsgate in April and the proportion condemned or destroyed?

MR. MCCURDY

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative-. The second part does not, therefore, arise. The total weight of fish landed in Billingsgate during April last was 13,342 tons, and the total weight condemned during the same period was 300 tons. The latter consisted mainly of herring, mackerel, and skate, coming from the North of Scotland and Ireland, which on account of the hot weather, arrived in a condition unfit for human food.
