HC Deb 20 June 1910 vol 18 cc26-7
Sir HENRY DALZIEL

asked the Prime Minister whether he adhered to the undertaking given at an earlier period of the Session that the Resolutions adopted by this House limiting the legislative powers of the House of Lords should be introduced into that House without any unnecessary delay, and that, in the event of rejection, advice would be tendered to the Crown with a view to ensuring that a Bill founded upon such Resolutions should become law?

Mr. CLOUGH

asked the Prime Minister whether he has yet had the meeting with the senior Member for the City of London; and, if so, whether he could now state to this House what were the prospects of a conference being held between the party leaders upon the present relations between the two Houses of Parliament?

Sir HENRY DALZIEL

asked the Prime Minister whether his hope of an early meeting with the Leader of the Opposition had yet been realised; and, if so, with what result?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

The official announcement published on Friday evening shows what progress has been made in regard to a meeting between representatives of the Government and the Opposition. As regards the inquiries addressed to me, in the existing circumstances, I must ask my hon. Friend to be content with the assurance, which I have no hesitation in giving, that the Government have not lost sight of, and will not lose sight of, the declared objects of their policy.

Mr. WEDGWOOD

May I ask whether the addition of the Chief Secretary to the Conference was made at the request or at the suggestion of the Irish Party, and whether arrangements will be made to include a representative of the Labour Party?

The PRIME MINISTER

I do not think that that is a question which ought to be put to me. There has been no addition of any sort or kind.
