HC Deb 23 February 1910 vol 14 c207
Mr. REMNANT

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state how many men of the Metropolitan Police Force are now in receipt of the one day's rest in every seven sanctioned by Parliament last year?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Churchill)

My predecessor at the Home Office explained, in his answer of the 4th November last, that the grant of one day's rest in seven must be given by instalments spread over a considerable time, the duration of which depends upon the progress which can be made in recruiting. He hoped to be able to give the first instalment within a year from that date. I am glad, however, to be able to say that such advance has now been made that the Commissioner hopes to be able to give the first instalment in April next.

Mr. REMNANT

Does that answer apply to the beginning of April or the end?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I do not know, but I will inquire if the hon. Gentleman wishes.

Mr. BYLES

Are similar proportionate privileges enjoyed by the men of the provincial police force?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I must ask for notice of that question.
