HC Deb 23 February 1910 vol 14 cc207-8
Mr. REES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he can give the House any information regarding the rising of the aboriginal tribes in Bastar?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Montagu)

A rising of aboriginal tribes in the Bastar State was reported on the 8th inst.; the Raja asked for assistance, and accordingly the Political Agent and 250 armed police went to the scene of disturbance. Subsequently the movement spread, and owing to the increasing number of rebels the Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces asked for the despatch of some troops to reinforce the police. The necessary action has been taken, and no trouble in dispersing the rebels is anticipated. The cause of the rising is as yet unknown.

Mr. REES

Is there any reason to suppose that it is due to any misconduct or exactions, as in 1876?

Mr. MONTAGU

As I have stated, the cause of the rising is still unknown. Perhaps my hon. Friend will ask a question later.
