HC Deb 11 April 1910 vol 16 c869
Mr. REMNANT

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the officer in charge of the Pentonville Labour Exchange (No. 9) recently offered six machinery moulders positions abroad to the unemployed, but refused to tell them to which country they would have to go, and that anyone accepting the work would have to pay his own fare; and, if so, whether, in all such cases, he would see that full information was given and means found of giving temporary financial assistance to deserving persons?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD Of TRADE (Mr. H. J Tennant)

A notice intimating that six moulders for machinery castings were required for vacancies abroad was exhibited at the Finsbury Labour Exchange, in the Pentonville Road. The notice stated that applicants proceeding to these vacancies would have to pay their own fares. No suitable workmen applied for any of these positions. Had any done so, all the information in the possession of the officials at the exchange would have been afforded. The Board of Trade have no power to give temporary financial assistance in the manner suggested by the hon. Member's question, but may advance fares in certain circumstances by way of loan, to be repaid by the employer or the workman in accordance with the published Regulations.

Mr. REMNANT

Does the granting of temporary assistance apply to employment in foreign countries?

Mr. TENNANT

I should like to have notice of that question.
