HC Deb 13 September 1909 vol 10 c1726
Mr. HUGH BARRIE

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland) what was the total-amount of compensation paid to farmers who were supplied with improper flax seed last year; and what sum was recovered from the firm who sold the seed to the Department?

The ATTORNEY-GENERAL for IRELAND (Mr. Cherry)

The sum paid by the Department was £807. A claim for damages has been made by the Department against the firm from which the seed: was purchased, and the matter is at present in the hands of the Department's legal advisers.

Mr. BARRIE

As this matter is now a year old, how much longer time is required before the Department press the claims?

Mr. CHERRY

The Department is-pressing the claims. The Law Officers were consulted and it is a very difficult and doubtful point if there is the right to-recover. We have advised in the matter, which cannot be tried until October.
