HC Deb 06 September 1909 vol 10 cc902-3
Mr. O'SHAUGHNESSY

asked the Chief-Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if he can state what steps did the inspector of the Estates Commissioners take before recommending the allotment of the untenanted land on the Vereker estate, near Abbeyfeale, to the tenants to inquire into the wants of the labourers and cottiers in the district for the land; did he interview any representative person in the locality as to their position or inquire as to their numbers; and can he state why preference was given to the tenants and the representation of the Newcastle, West, District Council in the matter ignored?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Estates Commissioners inform me that their inspector inspected the estate in due course and interviewed the applicants for parcels of the untenanted lands which were allotted by the Commissioners in the exercise of their discretion. The resolution of the Newcastle, West, District Council was duly considered by the Commissioners.
