HC Deb 02 September 1909 vol 10 c572
Mr. BELLOC

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that the statements put in after the conviction of Von Veltheim and before his sentence were not put in by the police in the ordinary way, but were put in by a detective who had been previously privately employed by the prosecutor; and what steps he proposes to take in view of that fact?

Mr. GLADSTONE

I have made inquiries, and learn that the statements referred to were put in in the ordinary way by the police officer engaged in the case. He is an officer of the City of London Police, and was never in the employ of the prosecutor.

Mr. BELLOC

Are we to understand that the information was not supplied by a detective who had been in the paid employ of the prosecutor and that that was the only source?

Mr. GLADSTONE

I have answered according to information which has been given me and which I have no doubt is accurate.
