HC Deb 10 May 1909 vol 4 cc1452-3
Mr. FELL

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if the maximum amount of labour is now being employed at the dockyard at Rosyth, and every possible step being taken to expedite the construction of the docks capable of containing the largest battleships. which can be reasonably anticipated?

The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. McKenna)

A contract has been let for the completion of the work within a fixed time, namely, seven years. A substantial bonus has been offered for earlier completion, namely, £800 a week.

Mr. FELL

Has every possible step been taken to provide a dock on the North-East Coast that will admit "Dreadnoughts"?

Mr. McKENNA

In view of the pretty substantial bonus the contractors no doubt will consider it to their advantage to take every step to complete the work as soon as possible.

Mr. FELL

Has the contract been let, and everything that could be done?

Mr. McKENNA

Everything, everything.
