HC Deb 10 May 1909 vol 4 c1430
Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can state the number of gallons of petrol imported into the United Kingdom during each of the last five years?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

The number of gallons of petrol imported into the United Kingdom during each of the last five years cannot be stated, as there is no separate heading for that article in the official import accounts. The imports of petroleum spirit (i.e., the lighter products of petroleum, including benzine, benzoline, naphtha, gasoline, motor car spirit, petrol, etc.) in each of the years 1904 to 1908 were as follows:—

Gallons.
1904 11,972,459
1905 18,658,391
1906 26,792,687
1907 33,536,739
1908 41,807,995
