HC Deb 10 May 1909 vol 4 cc1430-1
Mr. H. C. LEA

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of the demand in Great Britain for liqueurs in small-sized bottles on account of the high cost of all liqueurs, and also of the fact that under section 9 of 11 and 12 Vic., c. 121, the privilege of selling liqueurs in smaller measures than one reputed quart is accorded to the foreign trader from which the home trader is expressly excluded by reason of section 2 of 24 and 25 Vic., c. 21, unless he holds a public-house licence; and that in consequence of this privilege to the foreign trader foreign liqueurs are now being imported in six, four, and even two-ounce measures, to the detriment of the British liqueur distiller; and whether he can rectify this difference of treatment in his present Budget scheme?
