asked the Secretary of State for War if he could state what was the total number of horses purchased and employed for the purposes of the War in South Africa, and what proportion of the number was obtained in the United Kingdom?

The total number of horses purchased and employed for the purposes of the War in South Africa amounted to 518,794. Of these, 84,235 came from the United Kingdom.
