HC Deb 10 May 1909 vol 4 cc1420-1
Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

asked the Secretary of State for War whether any of the oats, hay, and straw, on which the artillery horses at Aldershot had been recently fed, came from abroad; and whether he could assure the House that anthrax did not arise from this cause?

Mr. HALDANE

As I explained on 5th May to the hon. and gallant Member, it is not possible to give a reply to the first part of the question. As regards the last part of the question, very careful inquiries have been made as to the cause of the outbreak, but nothing has transpired to indicate the source of the infection.

Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman deny that the principal proportion of the forage served at Aldershot is foreign forage?

Mr. HALDANE

I should doubt it very much. I should think that a great deal of it came from this country.

Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

The greater proportion is foreign.

Mr. HALDANE

No, no.

Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

Oh, it is.
