HC Deb 03 May 1909 vol 4 c713
Mr. BOTTOMLEY

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, during the South African War, any British troops received their pay in Transvaal silver coinage, which they are now unable to negotiate in this country; and, if so, whether he would make arrangements with the Treasury for the honouring of such coin?

Mr. HALDANE

Transvaal silver was used to some extent for the payment of British troops, and arrangements were made by which the payees could secure exchange at face value in South Africa. I have no information as to any difficulties now existing, and should be glad if my hon. Friend would communicate with me as to any cases within his knowledge.
