HC Deb 03 May 1909 vol 4 c715
Mr. WALTER REA

I desire to ask the right hon. Gentleman whether the advantage of the barracks at Scarborough have been taken into account in considering the stations for cavalry depots?

Mr. HALDANE

Scarborough has been selected to be the station of a cavalry depot. I may take this opportunity of informing the House that the other five stations are Woolwich, Dublin, Edinburgh, Bristol and Seaforth.

Mr. REES

1s the right hon. Gentleman aware that the selection of Seaforth has caused great disappointment in Wales, and will he consider whether it is possible to select some place in Central or North Wales?

Mr. HALDANE

For this purpose I can only give way to military considerations, and those considerations are that these depots should be as near as possible to the large centres of population.

Earl WINTERTON

Will these new depots involve the abandonment of the existing cavalry stations?

Mr. HALDANE

These depots are something quite new, and they will form the centre of the group regiments at home.

Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

In the case of Edinburgh will the depot be the in-sanitary Piershill Barracks?

Mr. HALDANE

They are not insanitary for the artillery, who will be turned out.
