§ The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Burns)I understand that the guardians have adopted regulations for the guidance of the members in the administration of outdoor relief which provide for widows or wives of men in hospital, infirmary, asylum, or prison, receiving Is. 6d. and one loaf per week for each child not above school age, the total amount of relief in money not to exceed 10s. It is, however, also provided that any cases in which there seems good reason to depart from any of the regulations should be referred to a committee of the whole board. Many such cases are referred to that committee and dealt with by it. Moreover, the relieving officers can, at their discretion, give further relief in kind should the circumstances warrant it. Hence it would seem that due precautions are taken to avoid hardship.
