HC Deb 26 July 1909 vol 8 c850
Mr. CREAN

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware that the Estates Commissioners, when dividing the untenanted land on the Sarsfield estate, Carrigaline, county Cork, refused to reinstate the representatives of McDonnell and Scriven, tenants who were evicted from holdings on that estate; whether he is aware that farms have been given to others than evicted tenants, one being a caretaker of land from a distant part of the county; will he explain why these evicted farms were so disposed of; and what are the intentions of the Estates Commissioners in regard to the claims of the representatives of McDonnell and Scriven?

Mr. BIRRELL

The lands in question were not acquired by the Estates Commissioners under the Evicted Tenants Act, but under the Irish Land Act, 1903. The Commissioners decided, after inquiry, to allot no land either to Margaret McDonnell or Mary Scriven, who applied for holdings as the representatives of evicted tenants.
