HC Deb 21 July 1909 vol 8 c514
Mr. LAIDLAW

asked if the Government of Bengal will, under the new code which comes into operation in January next, make grants to primary and secondary European schools for new buildings and equipment equivalent to what is subscribed by private parties, as has hitherto been the practice?

The MASTER of ELIBANK

The Secretary of State understands that the new rules as to Grants in Aid to European schools in Bengal have been in force for over two years. Building grants are made under these rules for the erection of schools to the extent of one-half of the total cost of the building operations. Grants are also made for equipment in furniture and other appliances. The new rules as regards grants are much more liberal than those previously in force. The hon. Member will find information on the subject in paragraphs 852–4 of the Quinquennial Report on Education recently presented to Parliament.
