HC Deb 02 December 1909 vol 13 c540
Mr. REES

asked the Under-Secretary for the Colonies, whether an authenticated case of sleeping sickness occurred in the Native hospital of the Church of Scotland Mission in Nyasaland last September; and whether he is aware that the existence of other cases is suspected?

Colonel SEELY

Two natives suffering from sleeping sickness were admitted to the Blantyre Mission Hospital on the 8th of June and 14th of August respectively. The first patient died in July, and the second, who came from Portuguese territory, died in September. The natives of Nyasaland are being systematically examined for sleeping sickness. Up to the 30th of September four cases had been discovered, but there is no reason to suppose that infected persons are numerous in the Protectorate.
