HC Deb 07 April 1909 vol 3 cc1150-1
Mr. HUDSON

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he can say what steps have been taken, on the complaint of the electrical wiremen and their trade union against the firm of Armstrong Whitworth Company, Elswick, not carrying out the conditions of the fair wages clause; and whether any decision has been given in this matter?

The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. McKenna)

Representations have been made by the Executive Council of the Electrical Trades Union that certain electrical wiremen employed by the firm of Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., Elswick, have not been paid by that company the fair wages due to them under the contract held by that company for building His Majesty's ships "Invincible" and "Superb." The matter has been carefully investigated by obtaining detailed particulars from the Union, and from Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth, and Co., but further inquiry is necessary before a decision can be arrived at.
