HC Deb 29 October 1908 vol 195 cc463-4
SIR SEYMOUR KING (Hull, Central)

To ask the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that in the case of railways in India worked by companies there has been an increase in the pay and emoluments of the revenue branch of the service consequent on their growth and expanded traffic, especially in the case of the heads of the traffic, engineering, and locomotive departments, whereas on the State railways, even in a system so extensive as the Northwestern Railway, the rates of pay of the chief traffic and locomotive officers remain on the same scale as when the railways were first started, although the pay of all railways in the engineering department has lately been improved; whether he is aware that dissatisfaction exists, and the Government of India has been approached on the subject by the officers affected; and whether he has received any representations upon the subject from that Government or from the railway board.

(Answered by Mr. Buchanan.) The answer to these Questions is in the affirmative. Proposals on the subject are at present under my consideration.
