HC Deb 09 November 1908 vol 195 cc1671-2
MR. DUNDAS WHITE (Dumbartonshire)

To ask the First Commissioner of Works if he can say when Stirling Castle passed under the control of His Majesty's Office of Works; and what steps have since been taken to preserve the buildings, to continue the military traditions, and to maintain the historic associations of the castle.

(Answered by Mr. Harcourt.) Stirling Castle passed under the control of His Majesty's Office of Works in December, 1906, when immediate steps were taken to rescue the ancient historic buildings from the condition of decay and defacement into which they were rapidly falling. Interesting original work of an architectural character has been discovered and preserved, and serious structural defects threatening the ruin of the actual fabric have been repaired. The military traditions remain undisturbed, the Castle being occupied by a garrison.
