HC Deb 26 May 1908 vol 189 c954
MR. VINCENT KENNEDY (Cavan, W.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if he will say whether the Local Government Board have yet taken any definite steps to have The Labourers (Ireland) Act, 1906, put into operation in the Enniskillen (No. 2) Rural District; is he aware that there is a real want for labourers' cottages in the district, and that the council is anxious to have the scheme proceeded with; and will the matter have his first attention.

MR. BIRRELL

As I have already informed the hon. Member, the delay in this matter was attributable to the clerk of the rural district council, who is now being called upon to resign. Should the council fail to submit an improvement scheme to the Local Government Board for confirmation at an early date, the Board will consider the propriety of taking steps under Section 9 of the Act of 1906. If, however, the council are anxious to proceed with the scheme as the hon. Member suggests, there will be no necessity for the Board to adopt compulsory measures.
