I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury if he can state the number of grades there are in the clerical branch of His Majesty's Customs Department; and how many of the different titles or grades carry similar salaries.

I beg to refer the hon. Member to pp. 4, 5, 6 and 8 of the published Estimates, from which it will be seen that the male clerical establishment comprises—

Classes.
In the Secretary's Office 5
In the Accountant-General's Office 5
In the Statistical Office 6
In the Port establishments 9
Several of these classes are common to two or more branches. But there are two classes in the Secretary's Office having the same scale of salary as different classes in the Statistical Office; and one class in the Accountant-General's Office having the same scale as a different class in the Statistical Office.
