HC Deb 14 May 1908 vol 188 cc1344-5
MR. WILLIAMSON (Elgin and Nairn)

I beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland if he has received a memorial from the County Council of Morayshire, and other bodies, asking that the Government grant for police pay and clothing should he increased so as to amount to one-half of the actual cost, as in England; and, if so, whether he will take the matter into favourable consideration.

MR. SINCLAIR

I have received the memorials referred to by my hon. friend on the general question, and as explanatory of the differences in method adopted in England and Scotland in this matter I may refer to my Answer to the hon. Member for St. Andrews Burghs on 18th February, 1907. I appreciate the importance of the question and it shall continue to receive my serious consideration.

*MR. GULLAND (Dumfries Burghs)

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that his scheme for pooling the grants under his Education Bill will be seriously endangered if this grievance is not remedied?

MR. SINCLAIR

I do not see how that arises.
