HC Deb 07 May 1908 vol 188 c434
MR. CLAUDE HAY

I beg to ask the Postmaster-General, whether he has taken any special measures, and, if so, whether he will state the nature of those measures, to secure British subjects competent in the French language for the posts now occupied by aliens in His Majesty's telephone service in the United Kingdom.

MR. SYDNEY BUXTON

Special inquiries have been made, and are being made, with the object of securing British subjects who possess such familiarity with colloquial French as is necessary for the service of the Continental Telephone lines by night. There are two foreigners only employed.

MR. CRUDE HAY

When will the special inquiries be completed?

MR. SYDNEY BUXTON

We are always on the look out for men who will suit us and if the hon. Member can suggest anyone, or will himself volunteer for the job, I shall be very glad to take him on.

MR. CLAUDE HAY

I will certainly give consideration to that offer.
